A little over a year ago, I received a phone call that would ignite a transformative journey. Dr. Stacy Chambers, then the Superintendent of Florida State University (FSU) Schools, reached out with a bold and provocative question: “How can we integrate AI into schools?” At the time, this concept was not only forward-thinking but controversial. The integration of Artificial Intelligence into education was a topic fraught with debate, skepticism, and fear—particularly in how it might disrupt traditional classroom dynamics.
Over the months that followed, Stacy and I engaged in deep research and thoughtful discussions on how we could achieve this ambitious goal without interfering with the sanctity of what we jokingly referred to as "Ms. Jackson’s Civics Class.” During this time, Stacy transitioned to a new role at Charter Schools USA (CSUSA), where she continued to champion innovative ideas. It was during one of our meetings that I presented a vision—a "Trojan Horse" of sorts: What if we built an AI Filmmaking Program that sat outside the traditional curriculum? This program would not only introduce students to cutting-edge technology but also empower them to tackle pressing societal issues creatively. Stacy loved the idea, and with her support, the proposal was brought to CSUSA. The green light was given for a 6-week pilot program at Renaissance Academy in Tallahassee, under the guidance of Principal Precillia Vaughn.
